There has been a new developer video released where lead designer Mike Laidlaw, executive producer Mark Darrah and others are talking about the ideas behind the combat system, the inspiration and the creation process.

It's too bad the combat system is so primitive, flawed, and undocumented. It is as bad as the rest of the game is good

how is it primitive?
last thing is recal is that most rpgs (mostly consoles) are all about button smashing
plus, games have been using this kind of combat system for a while (taking out the pause option) and its still as good as ever

i'll have to respectifully and completetly disagree with you on that one,
the combat system is not flawed, its simply trying to do something new with the old combat system used in most games, which works very well compared to old button smashing action
