Today, BioWare announced a new DLC for Dragon Age Origins called Return to Ostagar which is going to be available for download and cost $5.
- A return to the battlefields of Ostagar, now thick with darkspawn encamped amidst the snow
- An opportunity to reclaim the lost arms and armor of a king
- A second chance to add Dog to your party
Return to Ostagar will be released this holiday season. Click here to read more about the new upcoming DLC.

I guess this is a start. Later, we’ll get DLC that expands into the other countries, right? Right? Perhaps we’ll be taking part in the fights against the other Old Gods, yes?

A Dev on the boards confirmed the playtime something about an hour …

The items they have mentioned that will be in the DLC are resources already within the game. Easy enough DLC for them to make to still cash in on the player base that is still following the game. Month or so from now, Bioware will not have half the consumer base that is present right now. Can't fault them too much for wanting to create something fast and dirty for profit, instead of creating something substantial and new. Just hope this isn't what they are considering as quality DLC as it will not bode well for future projects from them.

I'd rather wait two months for something that's 20 hours of play time instead of getting new 15-minute DLCs every week.

I agree, this doesn't make sence. I think people expect some new interesting storyline and new regions to explore, not just chewed-up content we have already seen.

Although I have to agree, we must not forget that we are not forced to buy any of the DLCs. They're just a little bonus and not having them installed will not extract parts of the original campaign or the fun you'll have with the original game. Of course everybody wants to have as much out of the game as possible. That includes purchasing those DLCs though. Still, it's completly up to you wether you want to wait for a DLC with more content or not. But bashing BioWare or EA does not fit here imho.

Agreed, I had no intension to bash BioWare or EA. I just hope the upcoming DLCs won't be plain as this one (pure commercial attempt to lure some more money from players)

Hey, whatev, we are lucky EA let Bio finish DA:O. The fact is, the more they sell, the more trust/resources they get from EA. I imagine Dragon Age 2: Blight Strikes Back will be a vastly improved game, with triple A support from big EA.
If I can help by buying horse armor, sign me up!

the problem with DAO is that new histories are too sort, and cant be joined to the rest of campaing. Well, we have Shae's character at least with the first DAO addon, but with the wardens keep and this return of ostagar,i dont know… its a little addon..too little addon.

For $5? That's a TINY amount of money. That's like buying one less piece of cake. :3

A return to the pre-existing and decidedly not new Ostagar area. Where, if you were one of the two people on the planet that failed to add Dog to their party, you can a second chance to bone it. Really, you should unlock an achievement if you fail to add Dog to your party the first time around. It's pretty hard to do.
While it's not exactly Horse Armor (I suppose it is King's Armor) it's a demonstration of what can be wrong with DLC, and is exactly why the pro-argument for DLC ("…don't want to wait a year for a full expansion, would rather have a little bit at a time…") carries no weight with me.

The problem I have with the way DLC is being handled by Bioware, is the fact they are setting it up as a market, instead of an extension of the game. Just because me and 3 other will not buy it, they will continue to make the small offerings for that one that will. I suppose a part of me understands this is the way the industry is going, but I don't have to think its a good way of doing it. I would rather see DLC that caters to the wide mass market, instead of finding those that are willing to buy into the specialty market.

On the Joystiq website, it now says that the DLC will be released on the 5th of January 2010. So much for the "Holiday Season".

Not so, unfortunately (for PS3 players) the process for getting content approved by Sony takes much longer than the same process with M$. The result is PS3 players having to wait a little longer for their DAO loving.
Expect about the same delay as was seen with the release of the main game.
Comment by CaK on January 3, 2010 at 2:13 pm
@Illiani That is correct.
Comment by Omegakain on January 3, 2010 at 5:26 pm
I stand corrected.

I am, unfortuantly, the barer of bad news, BioWare have just announced that RtO is delayed on all platforms.:
"We’re sorry but the planned Return to Ostagar downloadable content scheduled to launch on January 5th has been delayed for all platforms."
I'm currently looking for more information and will get back to you all once it is found.

A quick scan through the 52 pages (and growing) on the social thread has revealed nothing of real value. The existence of a Teagan fan base, yes; A nude Dwarf picture, yes; Trolling, yes; but nothing of real value.
The main theories at the moment are:
o) Sony have complained about the separated release date–I counter this with "delayed for all platforms", but you could see why Sony *might* want to do this.
o) A technical error, not related with the DLC per say, rather to do with its' delivery.
o) A game breaking bug within the coding–this is the most likely in my opinion.
o) BioWare gave Sandal a second line and the game broke.

Why there is a countdown for RtO DLC?
