FUNimation Entertainment to create an anime movie based on BioWare's Dragon Age setting
BioWare, Electronic Arts and Funimation are teaming up to create an anime movie based on the Dragon Age franchise. No other info is revealed yet besides that it will be released for home video in 2011.
BioWare and FUNimation Entertainment announced today an agreement to create an anime feature film adapted from BioWare’s critically-acclaimed fantasy Action RPG franchise Dragon Age. Production of the Dragon Age anime movie is slated to begin in May 2010, with a home video release in 2011. Executive producing the film are BioWare’s Executive Producer Mark Darrah and Creative Director Mike Laidlaw, as well as FUNimation’s Fukunaga and Director of Original Entertainment Chris Moujaes.
Mark Darrah, Executive Producer for the Dragon Age franchise says:
Anime is a great medium for us to continue the robust Dragon Age story. Partnering with FUNimation ensures that we are delivering the exceptional quality and entertainment value that our Dragon Age fans expect.
Gen Fukunaga, President and CEO of FUNimation continues:
We are thrilled to be working with EA and BioWare on the production of the Dragon Age anime feature. We are going to be bringing the classic visual and storytelling techniques found in anime to create a film that will extend the narrative of the world BioWare has created.
Dragon Age has been selected as the first title in FUNimation’s slate of major anime movies to be developed through FUNimation’s Original Entertainment team since the announcement of the company’s co-production initiative in November 2009.
As a huge Leliana fan myself, I am wondering how she will looke like in the new Dragon Age anime movie. I found this nice picture which immediately reminded me of the bard. What do you think? Are you going to watch the anime movie?
We will keep you posted on this topic once more information is revealed by BioWare/EA. So stay tuned …

I supposed you asked the permissions to Shilin to use her art in this article.

I just don't see that animation style representing what we have come to visually expect from the Dragon Age world.

Oh look, it's Flemeth as a ten year old… *Sigh* Whatever they are drinking at BioWare, I must get me some.

Keep in mind, that those pictures here were not made by BioWare. They're just a collection I put into that article to get a feeling for what _may be_ coming …

The HELL!?!?!?!? Why the hell is just about everyone commenting on this wants to slam it before any actual material surfaces??? Hey, here’s a CRAZY idea: actually WAIT until it actually comes OUT before you cry blasphemy like a bunch of whining fangirls. I’ve seen anime-stylized art from fans of Dragon Age of DA characters, and it looks GREAT, so I say give it time before shooting it down.

I agree, actually. Funimation isn't a terrible company either. They do a pretty good job, as opposed to other dubbing/subbing companies in the past. Granted, I know anime/manga isn't for everyone but let's at least see what it looks like first. I had the same iffy feelings when I heard the green lights get lit for Halo, Iron Man and Wolverine anime within the past year but it (Iron Man) actually looks pretty good. Can't say the same for Wolverine though, since it's been transformed into a bishonen (pretty boy) series.
Wonder which direction they're going to take it in as well. Main storyline or a standalone, related story like Warden's Fall? I think it'd be a bit more difficult to follow Origins with just one movie because it would mean choosing one Origin and one linear pathway.

yeah your right

Ah, my bad.
Still, I hope they steer of using "overly anime" graphics. Something along the lines of Avatar: The Last Airbender would be fine, though.

Should be cool, can't wait!
Why do people feel the need to complain so much? Nobody's forcing you to watch it, idiots

The anime person in me says it could be good. but the dragon age part of me agrees with you lol

I Just say WTFFFF!!!!!!! i mean anime?? in a dark fantasy game come on….. Morringan with blue hair, flameth is younger than Morringan it seems , why go so down Bioware?

Well its cool that a movie is coming out, but i do have to agree with some of the nay sayers. Dragon Age is a dark fantasy not something i feel should be destroyed by an anime film. Although more likely i will see the movie, i was hoping to hear of a real life Dragon Age movie. That would be the best movie of all time!

I myself am not a huge anime fan, there are a few animes out there that are pretty good and can pull off a dark fantasy type feel, and I will watch the Anime, probably even buy it to support Bioware, but I will not jump to conclusions and I wont right it off as a terrible idea right away, because I think it has a lot of potential to be really good.

why anime? why not a cgi movie or something like warden's fall. anime is for kids, ik i was a kid once and liked it. now that im an adult its boring and annoying to watch.

Who’s going to do it? FUNimation is a distributor with a couple of VAs.
None of the big, good studios will do it, they have enough to do. So we’ll likely get to see some not so great run-of-the-mill stuff. Gaianx, Ghibli, Production IG, etc, I just don’t see them do anything in this. If someone like Otomo or Anno would be involved yeah, I would have hopes, but I don’t see some US company get either of them.
People! Anime isn’t Hello Kitty, Pokemon or DBZ. There is a lot more. Just shows what kind of crap is sold as “anime” these days overseas. Most of the releases never make it out of Japan.
And Alexander, anime is for kids? Spoken like the typical, ignorant gaijin who knows about Japan “samurai”, “geisha”, “playstation”, “sushi” and “ninjaaaaa”. It’s a common Western misconception that anime (and manga) are for kids. Anime and manga both aren’t based on certain ages. Some anime I know would be banned on US tv. Heck, I guess NGE uncut is for kids, too, especially the final part, End of Evangelion, totally suitable for children. Or Akira, totally for kids as well. Saikano, especially when everything goes down the sewers in the end, is 100% suitable for children, yep! *facepalm*

I bet they'll make the main character some 'bishi' idiot.
Anime will destroy the amazing rep Dragon Age has gotten :( I agree with those that ask for a CG movie, it would do it so much more justice! It worked for Sacred Ashes so surely it would work for DA too, if the Japanese can make FFVII not a half bad looking CG movie then why cant we get the same for DA?
Comment by Stex on July 7, 2010 at 1:03 am
Dragon age origins wouldnt make a good anime , it simply wont work ,why not make a movie like the Sacred Ashes trailer , i know anime is cheaper but , it would look much better as a cinematic , DAO is not anime material !
Comment by Godzilla Guru on July 7, 2010 at 7:54 pm
I take it no one has heard of the dark fantasy anime/manga Berserk? I’ve only read parts of the manga and everything else was reading info online, but there are no ‘bishi’ idiot main characters in it, very dark with little good actually happening to the main characters (the main character gets raped as a little boy in the manga by a guy who pays his father, his best friend betrays him and their comrades for demonic powers, his best friend then rapes main character’s girlfriend right before his eyes, main character loses his hand fighting a demon, and the girlfriend gives birth to a demonic fetus and becomes traumatized because of it). So, yeah, that’s totally kid’s stuff. As I said before, WAIT AND FREAKING SEE!!!!!! Seriously, some of you are understandably skeptical, but those of you who base your anime experience on I guess Pokemon or some other 4kids dub obviously are so painfully narrow-minded you’d rather stick your heads in the dirt like a bunch of ostriches and ignore any actual facts that come your way. I know everyone’s entitled to their opinion, but some of them really show their ignorance.
@Stex: I thought the Sacred Ashes trailer was nice, but I didn’t like the characters faces. I played the game first before seeing the trailer, so I was kinda taken aback at the designs. The armor and costumes I wish were in the game as they were seen in the trailer, but I prefered the faces from the game, and the anime-styled fanart I’ve seen on deviantart looks like a respectable take on the characters. Just give it time.

By the Maker, what would Andraste say?
This is a terrible idea. Dragon age is not anime material. It is too good for it. Dragon Age should be a real-time film. Real actors and real enviroments. Anime is cheap, Japanese (no racism intended) cartoon. Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z is good as anime, but Dragon Age is too good. No..just, no.
Comment by ShadowLord on June 8, 2011 at 8:21 am
You guys have too high of standards. Keep in mind that CGI takes too much time and requires a lot of work to make it the way you want it. Take FFVII for example, it almost took 15 years to make that movie. 15 F'N years! They started working on it 2 years after the game was released.

u mentioned Pokemon and Dragon Ball Z, how long has it been since u watched anime, there is allot of anime today with visually beautiful art and the live action movie, come on u should know that would suck because Hollywood would give it cheap CGI and crappy actors with bad dialog.
Comment by Skyeraven on October 19, 2011 at 1:17 am
hey Halo was anime and it kicked ass so why not? the only problem i have is the studio they picked to make it I would havw went with a more reputable studio like Bones Studio.
