Dragon Age Origins Blog Amgarrak Golems of Amgarrak: Walkthrough

You are summoned to the Deep Roads by Jerrik Dace, a nobleman concerned for the fate of his brother Brogan, who left Orzammar with a cohort of soldiers to find the fabled thaig of Amgarrak. As one of the more mysterious cities of the Deep Roads, Amgarrak is rumored to be the site of a magical laboratory devoted to creating more powerful golems to fight against the darkspawn.

Character Creation and Difficulty Settings: As a high-level module, Amgarrak is designed for experienced players with powerful Wardens who have reached level 20 or beyond.  Importing an existing character  is easy – players can even search for specific saved games to further customize their downloads. Once imported, everything from your Warden’s tactics settings to their spell/abilities hotbar transfers too, along with all their possessions, meaning you can hit the ground running on your most familiar character.

If you choose to roll a new Orlesian Warden for the DLC you’ll start the game at level 20, bearing a set of tier 7 armor and weapons, and a number of basic supplies like poultices, bombs, and potions. But rolling a new character can pose a significant challenge if you intend to tackle this module on Hard or Nightmare settings.

Combat in Amgarrak is definitely more difficult than previous DLCs, and traps, spells, and clever AI tactics abound. Even on normal difficulty, fights against lieutenant or boss-level monsters can pose a significant challenge to an undergeared or lower-level Warden. On higher difficulty modes tactical pausing becomes a necessity, and battles are almost sure to prove fatal to the unprepared adventurer.

Amgarrak Bestiary:

Undead - Zombies, skeletons, Revenants and Arcane Horrors stalk the halls, and where there’s one undead, there will undoubtedly be more. Expect devastating melee attacks from Revenants, and high-powered spells like Fireball, Curse of Mortality, and Crushing Prison from the Horrors.

Golems – Driven mad by the warped lyrium energies of the thaig, the golems of Amgarrak are formidable opponents. Hurl is their standard opening salvo, and they’ll follow it up with a barrage of Slams and Quakes. Higher-level golems boast magical abilities, like Chain Lightning. Unlike golems we’ve met before, these opponents also work together, coordinating their abilities to chain-stun or continuously knock down your party.

Shades - Angry spirits of dwarven fighters and Tevinter mages trapped forever in the lyrium streams of Amgarrak, undead shades are the spiritual copies of the warriors, rogues and mages they were in life. Shades lurk in the shadows of the thaig, waiting to catch unsuspecting travelers off guard, and unlike the skeletal undead, they leave no corpse to signal their presence. Tread lightly!

Darkspawn - Even the darkspawn have gotten wilier in this DLC. Shrieks are more prone to ambush, genlocks and hurlocks are more bloodthirsty, and emissaries cast more debilitating and clever spells. Expect traps, Paralysis, and Crushing Prison.
