Podcast: Dragon Age 2′s Art Direction
Aug 6
BioWare's second Dragon Age 2 podcast with new race concept art
A big point of focus for BioWare in Dragon Age 2 is going to be refining and defining the art style. The developers themselves have admitted they weren’t completely satisfied with the look of Dragon Age: Origins. Art director Matt Goldman sat down for a lengthy interview on how the art team is overhauling the look of the upcoming game to make it instantly recognizable and deeply ingrained into the world itself.
The podcast came with a new concept art looking at both male and female drawings of all four major races: Qunari, Humans, Elves, and Dwarves. We’d link it here, but BioWare wants to keep it exclusive to their blog, so we’ll respect that wish. You can visit the blog post and check out the new concept and the podcast at the official BioWare Blog.
Definitely take the time to listen to the very interesting podcast. But here’s a quick recap of some of the things Goldman talks about in the interview:
- Defining the look of Dragon Age 2: As has been covered in previews before, a major sticking point for the developers is making a product that will be instantly recognizable as Dragon Age 2. While Origins sometimes had a “whimsical” look to it that didn’t seem to fit the darkening world of the Blight, the art in the sequel will be more appropriate to the world around it. The pic used for this posts banner, Pieter Bruegel’s “Triumph of Death,” was noted as Goldman by an inspiring piece toward defining a new art style in Dragon Age 2.
- Uniformity: Goldman touches on making some of the art for the world more uniform amongst itself. Highlight the darkspawn in particular, he says that some of the visual changes are being made to tie groups together. So the darkspawn in Dragon Age 2 will look more like they belong together and although genlocks and hurlocks and shrieks are each unique, the style of how they are designed will help link they together better so they look like they’re all “part of one army.
- Race tweaks: We already saw an early glimpse of a revamped Qunari and were promised some tweaks to how elves and dwarves look too. In the new concept art we can see some of the early differences made in the elves and dwarves. Goldman described the humans as “Men’s Fitness” magazine while the elves are “Runner” magazine and the dwarves are “the world’s strongest man” who can toss a beer keg over the house.
- Character design: Goldman talks a bit about how character creation works in Dragon Age 2. Although players are restricted to only humans now, your Hawke will still be fully customizable. Along with being able to customize your Hawke to your liking, your character will be fully expressive, unlike the blank emotionless Warden of Origins.
There’s plenty more than just this quick recap. Listen to the podcast and feel free to discuss below.

It would be great if we could have (child-safe, adult, etc) mods available from BW. I refer to the joke that Dragon Age takes itself serious about presenting mature themes in game play but the fact that BioWare presents everyone is in their underwear during mature scenes. It would be nice to have the weapons look a little different (i.e. not all swords look alike).

I have a couple of comments to ask and add on this.. as to what the elves will look like especially.. I came to playing DAO after several years of World Of Warcraft, Noticing the very similar style, look and gameplay, (even the exact same gold silver copper money system) and was immediatly happy to see that it was the best and closest console variation of what i enjoyed about single player WOW.. My point is this.. Please dont make the elves look unnatural like WOW did.. massive ears and glowing eyes etc lol that always annoyed me about the wow game..
I was quite against the idea of DA2 wanting my warden to carry on immediately but the more i read and see i too now see it as a neccesary evolution in progresing the story forwards and the added fact now that you starting Hawk can be fully customizable to your own look or creation even gender is a bonus i think might even change a few others who had a negative response.
I cant wait to see the more 'ravaged world' look of the game too.. even tho a blight had occured and even before it had.. things still seemed very.. Neat, tidy and clean.. even the characters. Id also like to see more variation in the design process of your character.. most of all better hair design, if your creating a woman it always puzzled me why when you saw other females in game they al had one of the limited hair styles you could also choose.. yet THE LADY (werewolf/Witherfang) had a truley unique hairstyle i would have loved and would have been perfect for my chosen female warden but was not available in the creation set.. This is one downside i hate about the console version the lack of being able to mod and alter things but given my pc wouldnt be able to keep up with the strain and is cheaper to upgrade my ps3 than my whole pc i'll suffer the console instead.

Also wanted to add that even tho this is an issue for gameplay not art direction i really hope at some point we get a huge battle sequence.. yes we had Denerim but to be honest most of the fun part of that was used in the cutsequence before we resumed control at the gates.. I long to charge at the horde with my army and be involved in that 1st heroic charge to kickstart the battle.. and also have that battle not being us reentering our city but possibly defending it.. (see Lord of rings movie when defending Helms deep or …. omg ive been playing DAO too much i cant remember the white city's name in LOTR lmao i keep wanting to say ostagar lol but non the less that kind of epic battle.. which yes i know its early days and may come as the finsl battle cos if you give us that now your left with the same dilemma of .. how to you top an archdemon as a badguy.

just please please please dont give us elves like world of warcraft has.. i played it for several years and our current ones in DA are so much better and realistic.. that said the bloodelf's were pretty hot (female) lol
Hoping that DA2 i can carry on at least one of my characters dark path too.. ie.. one of my characters in DAO and ultimatly one of my variations of hawk i will make will be evil.. choosing every possible bad choice i can just to see the flipside of that coin.. so even tho characters cant transfer events can so be interesting to see what effect the negative results for one of my DAO characters has in the new world.

agreed.. some of the darkspawn weapons looks so friggin awasom.. but they had lousy stats.. be nice to customize a weapon we like the look of and give it the stats we desire.. sort of like if this was a game with guns you could ass sniper scopes, silencers etc in this case get a shape you like or buy one from a blacksmith and then custom build your 'killing' blade to your choosing.. make it level specific aso not all killer upgrades are available straight away n make you work for them
