UPDATE2: Dragon Age 2: Gameplay Review

A warrior Hawke tears up some hurlocks
Gametrailers.com unleashed some early gameplay footage from one of the Dragon Age 2 demos on console. In the demo, a female Hawke warrior tears up a group of hurlocks with support from Bethany. And if there’s one thing to take away from this quick gameplay glimpse – the game moves fast.
UPDATE: The videos are back. See below for links!
Or check out the footage HERE or HERE. (Hopefully these videos won’t be removed.)
One of the first things we can look at from this clip is at the character select screen, and that’s noticing the difference in armors between the three classes. The mage is still decked out in robes similar to the robes that mages of the Circle wear. The warrior is wearing the heavier armor that we’re more familiar with from promotional material with the default male Hawke, looking to be composed of chainmail and light plated greaves and pauldrons. And then the rogue is in the light armor with similar style to the studded leather models from Origins.
It’s also important to note the weapon selection. The mage appears to have nothing (but is not selectable), although we know that mages will be restricted to using a staff. The warrior is boasting a two-handed sword and the rogue is dual-wielding. In Dragon Age 2, warriors will only be able to use two-handers or sword and shield, while rogues are restricted to dual-wield or archery. More about class roles here.
The demo opens with a short introductory cinema, with Bethany lightning-ing a Hurlock before Hawke rips two apart with her sword. The gruesomeness of the attacks are apparent. In redesigning the game’s art, the BioWare team has noted that the level of raw power your characters exhibits is something they want to keep and increase. That’s pretty apparent here.
As the actual gameplay begins, note that this is a console version of the game. The normal attack is mapped to the XBOX’s A button while three skills are set to the other three (on the right side of the screen). As spells or abilities are cooling down, the greyed out icon slowly fills clockwise indicating the cooldown, similar to Origins. On the console, it appears that an additional three abilities are located behind the ones that are up, allowing a player to shift between six special abilities or spells at once.
The character GUI with the health bar and stamina/mana is located in the bottom left with actual bars instead of the wrap-around indicator in Origins. Also there is listed what skill the character is using at that time.
As Hawke attacks, her two-handed sword is doing damage to multiple enemies at the same time, so those big looping swings aren’t magically missing adjacent enemies like before. As for specific skills, we see:
- Fireball – Bethany’s fireball explodes over an area and blows some of the Hurlocks to pieces.
- Mighty Blow – Hawke leaps into the air and brings her two-handed blade down in and overhead strike.
- Charge – Hawke bursts forward at high speed, covering ground and attacking.
- Whirlwind – Hawke attacks in an arc around her. This attack appears to have a similar range to something like the Warrior’s Massacre skill from Awakening.
- Threaten – Either is a taunt or a similar skill to the Threaten sustained ability of Origins, can’t tell.
- Spirit Bolt – A spell, Bethany shoots a white/purplish bolt at a single enemy. Appears to be very similar to Arcane Bolt.
- Knockbak – Hawke kind of pounds the ground. I assume this would do what the name suggests, knock back enemies who are surrounding you.
The combat in the video is fast and frenetic. Attacks are made quickly unlike the lumbering two-hand attacks of Origins. The enemies swarm fast and attacks and skills appear to be made very shortly after the commands are issued. BioWare has touted its more responsive combat system and it appears to run very fluid and very fast.
Also remember though that in the demo, it opens with Varric’s much exaggerated tale of Hawke’s escape before it transitions into the more accurate version. So a lot of the battle is highly exaggerated here to Hawke’s benefit. In the thread on the BioWare boards, lead designer Mike Laidlaw notes that you won’t normally be ripping through hurlocks in one swing.
We’ll let you draw your own conclusions on what to think about the gameplay you saw. Check out the discussion on the BioWare forums and BioWare’s responses here. Feel free to discuss and comment below!

Should be fixed now – sorry about that mixup!

I want to see the tactical pc version already! This is too much of an action game for me (though it actually looks quite good). I hope they will at least show off some pc footage at some point instead of what they've been doing so far which is saying "Hey look this time the game will fit the consoles better than ever before!".
Guess what, I don't care I just want to see exactly how it works on the pc.

Laidlaw noted that more gameplay will available “soon” although that is a pretty vague term. He confirmed that “soon” won’t be tomorrow, however, heh.

Is it true? That the footage was a nightmare on the eyes?

Saw the video and to me it was too much of an action game. They keep showing the console version, it's like they're saying "Hey look how much better the game fits the console now!". Well that's good and all but I want to see the pc version and the tactical combat already!

I must say I'm not impressed at all as of now. DA2 looks more like an MMORPG than a classic RPG …

That video was awesome! Cool to have Bohemian Rhapsody playing in the background, but the song running through my mind while watching the video was Long Time by Boston.
Can't wait to play DA2, but am really hoping to have the option of customizing the appearance of my female Hawke BEFORE the beginning fight sequence. Half of the fun for a girl is to build her character's appearance – a lot of thought and experimentation goes into it.

You will be able to customize your character before the game starts. Since this is just a demo only the presets are available.

is there any word yet on how the narration will work as been a little confused by this.. will it be the two characters in a cutscene then leading us straight into the action.. and same goes for those moments when we fast forward in time.. or will the narration be voice over while we battle or upon the opening of the scenes and cloing of the scenes we partake in.
i've done a lot of research lately on all the info i could find on DA2 and as a one time skeptic i'm now quite the opposite, but i guess time will tell on a final opinion.. March is rapidly approaching and from what i see in the demo (unless the reswt of the game is yet to be completed) it looks to me as though most of the work is already done months ahead of release.

oh and as for the land shown in the demo.. i really have to say wow (in more ways that just expression) the landscape looks just like Outland from another 'similar' game orr more presise.. Hellfire peninsular (sorry for bad spelling to any wow fans lol)

Working on the assumption that these aren't the finished graphics (I'm right, right? RIGHT?), the combat's lookihg good to me. The animations are a little JRPGish for my liking but the idea of more rapid gameplay appeals very much. I found myself a little too laid back during a lot of the DA:O combat- you shouldn't be able to leisurely sip a cup of tea during a boss battle.
Comment by stevegarbage on September 30, 2010 at 2:42 am
It's not really clear how it will work yet. I would assume there will be some cutscenes of Varric/Cassandra and then they will "phase in" to the actual gameplay where you're controlling Hawke. But details about how the frame will function really haven't been released.
Comment by stevegarbage on September 30, 2010 at 2:45 am
This footage is only of a demo at this point. BioWare has said you will be able to choose your gender and customize your appearance if you choose and then choose from one of the three classes.
This demo only features the "default" male and female Hawke and the mage class isn't available because the devs are still working on it. Remember that the game is still more than 5 months from release.

I think it looks way too fast for me at the moment, too much like an action game. And so far we've only seen the console versions. It's like they're saying "Hey look how well it fits on consoles now!". Well yeah but we'd like to see the tactical pc version as well! :P
Comment by Simon 'Crowangel' Lewis on September 30, 2010 at 12:27 pm
not bad.. i will also say that the darkspawn have definatly undergone a huge change.. now they actually look like the fabled humans gone over to the darkside and this effecting his/her physical appearence as apposed to just being a human that centurys later has turned into a orc, goblin etc
Comment by stevegarbage on September 30, 2010 at 2:08 pm
Well considering that this footage was leaked and not released by BioWare, technically they're not broadcasting that message. However the game does seem to run smoother for consoles now than the clunky Origins which is a good thing for console players.

I'm stoked. I mean, the worst thing about origins was the combat system, yeah the tactical approach worked, but the graphics were so laggy if you timed an order wrong, you'd have to wait like a second and a half to actually see it happen. Also, I hated telling Alistair to shield bash or whatever and watching him slide into position without moving his feet! This looks much more responsive, to those who complain about it looking too much like a boring action game *cough! god of war! cough!* they did say in an interview that it could do that at the beginning but by the end of the game, it tricks you into thinking more tactically and it runs more like origins by the end.
