Dragon Age 2 Alignments

Where does DA2's cast fall?
Last week we ran through the alignments of DA:Origins’ cast. Now let’s break down the DA2 squad using the Lawful/Neutral/Chaotic and Good/Neutral/Evil scales.
Bethany -Neutral Good
Like Wynne before her, as a mage, especially a mage who grew up as an apostate, it’s hard to fit Bethany anywhere else except here. Although she often wonders if life would have been better for everyone if she was in the Circle, I wouldn’t go so far as to say she really upholds the status quo of the law. Although Bethany disregards the law by living as an apostate, she always strives to help people and do good.
Carver - Lawful Neutral
I struggled with Carver. Certainly his life in a family of apostates has moved him more toward a longing for law, even though he lives in defiance of it. That’s exemplified by his desire to join the Templars or his acceptance of his role in the Grey Wardens. I was tempted to put him at Good, but remember his attitudes toward mages, that he’s willing to sometimes ignore the “right” thing in order to side with the law.
Aveline – Lawful Good
By far the easiest one on the list – as Captain of the Guard and with a morally uptight attitude, Aveline doesn’t come close to falling anywhere else. She is the law in Kirkwall and will do anything to protect it, while at the same time being an opponent of anything morally questionable. She’s got a tough exterior but inside is a total goody-two-shoes.
Varric – Lawful Neutral
Varric feels like a fit here. Neutral feels obvious because of his rolls in the somewhat seedier side of Kirkwall. However, throughout the game, Varric always seems to lean towards the side of justice, fairness and general kindness. It’s nearly impossible to make Varric a rival and you only accomplish it by being a psychotic anarchist.
Anders – Chaotic Good
Like Loghain, Anders is willing to destroy the world for a sense of justice. Anders contains strong convictions about the plight of mages and the role of the Chantry and his actions are consistently rebellious in trying to bring down the system. While he’s easily Chaotic, he also falls into Good because throughout the effort he’s always pushing for Hawke to seek justice and treat people fairly.
Fenris - Lawful Evil
I was conflicted about Fenris and really the designation is dependent on which aspect of his life you look at. I relied heavily on the descriptions at Thieves-Guild and even none of those sounded like they fit Fenris too well. Fenris is consistent in his actions and his goals but he’s not above using harsh tactics to accomplish them. While he’s not really willing to watch Hawke burn the world to the ground, he doesn’t have a problem with reaching into someone’s chest and crushing their heart if necessary.
Isabela – Neutral Evil
Isabela is a typical pirate. She loves plunder and booty (of any gender) and mostly only cares about herself. She could care less about whether society triumphs or fails and her personal moral compass is definitely skewed by years of the swashbuckling lifestyle. She’s a staple of this alignment.
Merrill - Chaotic Good
Like Fenris, Merrill feels like she falls victim to circumstances. She’s an outcast of the Dalish as well as a threat to the Chantry because of her path of blood magic. However, even while doing so, Merrill has a strong sense of what is right. Although when it comes to demons and dangerous magic she disagrees, in other cases she’s willing to help those in need and fight for right. She understands what she’s doing and that society views it as wrong, but her convictions and belief in her path are always strong.
Sebastian – Lawful Good
Sebastian is another easy case of Lawful Good. He’s a total choir boy. Although he’s somewhat conflicted about whether or not to march home and reclaim his land, he’s totally devoted the Chantry and the (mostly) good endeavors it undertakes.
Meredith – Lawful Evil
Meredith is the opposite of a Loghain. While Loghain plunges Ferelden into chaos to follow a path he feels is morally right, Meredith uses the law to crush the people of Kirkwall as a tyrant. As Knight Commander of the Templars she is the law and through it she uses it to increase her own power and influence. Although she thinks she’s doing what’s best for Kirkwall, it’s not as idealistic and reasonable as the antagonist of Origins.

I disagree about Merrill. I would say she is more chaotic neutral. She believes her intentions are good, but is it really? She knows danger of blood magic and yet, it does not stop her using blood magic even though she has been reminded of this by people who cares for her (especially, the Dalish keeper). Same argument goes for Eluvian. Also, like Anders, she does not mind killing people for sake of saving *fellow mages*, and a lot of times she doesn't even consider whether they are at wrong or right. She may have strong belief, but she seems to follow whatever whim strikes them at the moment. I'm also seriously considering putting her into "Moron" alignment.

We've reached a slow news period…

Oh it's incredibly slow out there. All's quiet on the DA front.

You seem to be classifying the characters based on their intentions and motives. I prefer to determine alignment based on the character's actions. I don't think, from a D&D-rules perspective, that either way is "right", but it does mean I found some of your choices surprising. Of course, the D&D alignment system (and whether it should even be used) has been the source of passionate geek arguments for almost 40 years…

Anyone play the ME3 demo yet? (I have not.) Anything about it that fills you with encouragement or trepidation for DA3?

I was just wondering why Orsino was left out. Also in regard to the lull in DA activity, I was wondering if they might release at least one final DLC to coincide with the release of Dawn of the Seeker. They did the same thing with Mark of the Assassin, but that might have been an exception.

How are her attempts to help elves across Thedas not good? She believes the Eluvian can irrevocably change the lives of the People for the better, and she strives to help all elves across Thedas with this revolutionary technology. According to Gaider, she has studied the lore about the Eluvian and extrapolated information from the shard, so she is more informed than anyone else (in this narrative) about the ancient elven artifact. Also, she has proficiently used blood magic for several years, and never abused her abilities, so she's no different than the Grey Wardens who also use blood magic. She clearly has a different cultural view than the Chantry of Andraste, so I don't see why you think she's a moron for having a different opinion.

"Lawful Neutral" for Varric doesn't sound right…. he's often sparring with Aveline over his mischief and has lines like "if I ever decide to get caught" to imply he's doing things less than legal.
I'd say he is True Neutral (or perhaps Neutral Good) as while he does have a sense of what is morally right and disapproves of Hawke's more aggressive, oppressive actions, he generally prefers not get involved in any conflict and will approve of Hawke getting up to 'harmless' highjinks.

I would add Cullen as a neutral evil or a Chaotic Good. But Merrill as a Chaotic good? hmm , i dont agree. She was deeply in love with Hawke , full negative and supported him either way in the templar/mage decision.definitely neutral evil.

Merrill only supports Hawke if he gains her full confidence over the course of seven years. Otherwise, she will oppose his efforts to kill all the mages, and will fight to the death to protect them.
