4. Joystiq preview:

*POSSIBLE SPOILERS*

“I’ll get impressions out of the way first: It’s faster and more brutal, less cerebral and more exaggerated. You might think that’s because BioWare wants to make the game a little flashier and more accessible, and you’d be right in part. But Dragon Age 2′s dark secret is that even if the action is a little more over-the-top and a lot darker, there’s a real, solid, story-based justification for it”.

“Someone else is actually making it up. The main characters of Dragon Age 2 are actually Cassandra and Verik, two people ten years down the line from the first game, that have to save a world on the brink of war not by fighting their own battles, but by finding out just what Hawke’s been up to since Dragon Age: Origins. In other words, the game is told in flashback, by a not-always reliable third party. Which means that if Hawke’s story is flashier, grittier, or more fanciful than the first game, that’s okay — anything that might be a lie probably is. “We wanted to see what happened if a legend is exaggerated,” said Laidlaw during the demonstration.”

“players would make decisions thatshow how “the Chantry’s fallen to pieces” and the world is brought to war. But however it’s done, we’ll be hearing about it from an NPC as we play”

2. IGN DA2 preview and comments from the Devs:

“We put up to 5 choice options and 5 investigate options per dialog node. There is also a difference between choices (where you are actually deciding something) and giving you the opportunity to express yourself in different ways (which I think is quite cool, but not something I believe we have released any details on yet)”.

- a description of a more dynamic combat: “When you order an archer to shoot a target, he already has an arrow ready for that so he can act almost instantly instead of pulling the arrow out of the quiver etc”.

1. “There’s still approval. But now instead of only getting content and combat bonuses based on positive approval, you can either build a rapport or an antagonistic relationship with your companions. Negative approval means they want to show you up, or see you fall on your sorry behind, but they still stick around.

There are way fewer gifts, and the gifts are follower-specific. (No more giving dog bones to everyone to boost approval.)

And followers can still turn on you or abandon you, regardless of how much they like you, based on your actions. (Like Leliana and Wynne at the Urn.)”

“Gifts trigger specific dialogues now. So you give your companion that “I’m with stupid” T-shirt and they ask you what in the Maker’s name you were thinking when you bought it.” Mary Kirby

July 17th

David Gaider confirms, that the dragon lady from the concept art is Flemeth.

2. DanteCousland’s summary of the whole GI article

3. Mary Kirby’s info on Flemeth: “She’s a thousand-year-old abomination, a shapeshifter who, according to legend (and according to the grimoire you give Morrigan) seduces mortal men in order to get herself more daughters. Her daughters are reputed to be able to kill men with fear. She’s both a seductress and a hag. She played up the hag aspect for the Warden, “Oh, never mind me, I’m just a crazy old bat who saved your life! Go on your quest and take my daughter with you! I’m sure nothing terrible could come from that…” But just because the Warden only saw her as the hag, doesn’t mean that’s all she was…

I would advise you that in any dealings with Flemeth, be confident of nothing.”

4. Mike Laidlaw’s info concerning save’s import: “Our intent is to include information and decisions from Awakening as well as Origins into DA2. [...] Therefore, assuming that because the GI article only talked about Origins because we were going to wad up every decision from Awakenings and toss them into the trash falls into that realm of negative conjecture. In truth, we look at Awakenings, Leliana’s Song and so on as part of a larger whole that we think of as Origins.”

July 16th

Mary Kirby reveals some information on the narrative style and quests in relation to the 10-year span of DA2:http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/3140407&lf=8 “Yes, any sidequests you want to do must be completed before a big narrative jump. And yes, there should be a few cues that doing something will cause the story to move forward in time. And there are sidequests that span several years”.
“The focus on the events isn’t super-ultra tight.

Example: You have the narrator saying, “Then, of course, the Champion arm-wrestled the disembodied Beard of Duncan on the roof of the chantry!” And Cassandra saying, “What? How did that happen?” And the narrator declares, “It’s kind of crazy, but I think it all started when…”

And then the game jumps to a playable point and the player can explore to see what’s changed over the years, chats with followers, rescues kittens from trees, etc. at their leisure. All the stuff that you’d normally do. It’s just that as you’re doing that, you maybe get a quest now and then to investigate reports of an extremely aggressive beard skulking around at night.

And eventually, you reach a point where someone shouts, “Maker’s breath! Someone come quick! There’s a glorious beard up on the chantry roof threatening to destroy the town!” And you can probably guess that once you go up there, there’s no coming back…”

And some news on NPC leaving or turning on Hawke:http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/3099230%26lf%3D8#3142057 “They won’t leave because of approval. They can still turn on you or leave forever based on your actions, however”.

David Gaider explains how Kirkwall got it’s name: http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/3127750&lf=8 “it had a different name when it was part of the Imperium, a name that was discarded after the slave rebellion (who hated the Imperium for probably understandable reasons). The current name refers to the massive black cliffs that border the waking sea, atop which the fortress was originally built”.

http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/3121608/1#3121811 – GI quote on the appearance of Flemeth.

SPOILERS!

“This dragon is more than it appears. After swooping down and grabbing a darkspawnin its talons, it transforms into a familiar figure: Flemeth. Still holding the dead darkspawn in her hand, Flemeth walks through the flames and approaches Hawke, saying “Well, well, what have we here?”

END OF SPOILERS

http://social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/3124740 – some new info from a German magazine

* decisions from DA:O carry over and shape the game world
* first part of the game plays during the same time frame as DA:O
* same combat system (although more dynamic? whatever that means)
* new combo system for melee and mage classes
* finishing moves for the mages

Some characters:
Bethany: mage sister of Hawke
Cassandra: inquisitor with interest in Hawke
Varric: dwarven friend of Hawke and narrator
Flemeth will reappear

  1. According to Dr. Ray Muzyka, senior vice president of EA and co-founder of BioWare, “Dragon Age 2 will simultaneously deliver an epic story and set a new bar for intense action in the genre.”
  2. The game promises that players will be able to “think like a general and fight like a Spartan”
  3. The game is also going to serve as a “new entry point” for newcomers, according to executive producer Mark Darrah. He also asserts that BioWare is working hard to make sure “fans of the original game retain a sense of satisfaction and familiarity in the world.” This may simply mean referencing events of the first game, or it could also mean a Mass Effect 2-style save transfer is being planned.
  4. Finally, the new protagonist has been named Hawke. He is a “penniless refugee who rises to power to become the single most important character in the world of Dragon Age.”
  5. Hawke will be a voiced character.
  6. Unlike Dragon Age: Origins, the player’s character in Dragon Age II will be fully voiced. This opens the door for a more cinematic approach to dialogue and creates an identity for the character outside of the text you see on-screen. It also eliminates those awkward scenarios where you feel like your character should be reacting, but instead just stares blankly without so much as a grunt.
  7. Hawke is human.
  8. Yes, that means that you won’t be able to select Hawke’s race. However, just because that one aspect of Hawke’s backstory is set doesn’t mean BioWare is eliminating character creation. You can still choose your class and customize your appearance. When we visited BioWare’s studio, we only saw (and heard) the male Hawke in action, but the team promises that players can select either gender for the character.
  9. Hawke didn’t just survive the blight…he escaped it.
  10. As the Grey Warden from Dragon Age: Origins was fighting darkspawn, Hawke was living in Lothering. Fans will remember that the small village was raided and destroyed (an event that occurred off-screen in Origins), and Hawke was one of the survivors. However, rather than stay and fight the darkspawn menace, Hawke flees Ferelden and heads north.
  11. Hawke is the Champion of Kirkwall.
  12. Kirkwall is a major population center in the Free Marches, a collection of city-states north of Ferelden. This means that at least some of the action in Dragon Age II will be set in Kirkwall itself, though Hawke will also spend time in other areas of the Free Marches. What exactly Hawke does to earn the honorary title of Champion, however, is up to you.
  13. Hawke drives the story.
  14. Dragon Age II is not about killing an ancient evil or about quelling another blight; Hawke is the driving force behind the narrative. Over the course of the game’s 10-year timeline, players’ actions and choices will determine Hawke’s history, relationships, and regrets…all in service to answering the larger question: Who is the Champion of Kirkwall?
  15. We’re getting the ME2 conversation wheel, but this time instead of having some dialogue be a particular color the center of the wheel will show a symbol to show what kind of reply it is. (The article uses the examples of them being something like aggressive or sarcastic)
  16. The PC version’s combat system remains mostly the same. “The PC version implements the same strategic approach afforded by a mouse-and-keyboard control scheme.” “Rather than try to mimic the PC experience on consoles, Dragon Age II has a battle system more tailored to the strengths of the PS3 and 360.”
  17. You can choose your class between a Warrior, Rogue or Mage.

I understand flowing dialogue to create an unbroken interactive movie… but why drop sentence summaries in exchange for 'colour coded dialogue wheels?'

Can't the audience just be taught how to read? Literacy could be like a tutorial at the start of the game.

Honestly, Bioware must regard their audience as contemptuously as I do to put in bright colours for them to click on instead of short text responses.

Only thing I'm unhappy with is conversation wheel. Why oh why?

I personally am going to miss my grey warden.
and while Bioware always delivers and I am always satisfied.
I feel apprehensive about this, hopefully I will be able to import the choices my warden made and they will have some kind of effect on the game. please be a good game, I really want to be excited about this game! sigh…

  5. Comment by Stex on July 11, 2010 at 12:45 am

Why turn Dragon Age into Mass Effect ? What a crap

  6. Comment by Fallerup on July 11, 2010 at 1:29 am

at least I get to choose Gender and class. Human was always my favorite anyway (and mage) as I played through DA:O 3 times: male human warrior, male elf mage and female human rogue :). The reason I like human origin story the best was simply that I had the dog to begin with. Others needed to do that quest to get it, and lets be honest, the dog is better in the tower vrs that ogre than a tower guard :) and if you played non-human you got the dog after Flemeth's hut, so…

  7. Comment by Jinx on July 11, 2010 at 3:45 am

    Ahhh… Bioware?
That conversation wheel sounds really BAD. What was wrong with the DA: O’s conversation system, it was a lot more emersed :( in my opinion this is a REALLY bad decision on their behalf and I know a lot of others would agree.

  8. Comment by stevegarbage on July 11, 2010 at 3:50 am

"Literacy could be like a tutorial at the start of the game."
    Priceless

  9. Comment by Kradath on July 11, 2010 at 1:30 pm

Reading every single line you say and hearing it afterwards again is shit, period, so good decision, keep it, thanks.

  10. Comment by tallshortguy on July 12, 2010 at 6:04 am

So is there any confirmation if the Grey Warden is even going to make an appearance? I'm very disappointed that a character I built from the ground up is possibly going to be irrelevant and not even featured in the sequel. I really hope Bioware rethinks this decision if the current speculation is true.

  11. Comment by Richard Rietdijk on July 13, 2010 at 12:03 am

"We’re getting the ME2 conversation wheel, but this time instead of having some dialogue be a particular color, the center of the wheel will show a symbol to show what kind of reply it is. (The article uses the examples of them being something like aggressive or sarcastic)"

As I am reading it: You still get your regular DA:O dialogue options in sentence form, yet instead of coloring them red or blue (as it is in mass effect) there will be an icon in the middle of the circle implying what kind of comment it is.

  12. Comment by Richard Rietdijk on July 13, 2010 at 12:04 am

    Like:

You just found 150 codex pages. now READ UP. There'll be a test later!
    sounds good to me ;-)

  13. Comment by Darq Gus on July 13, 2010 at 7:42 am

Nah, I'd read it incorrectly. I should take my own literacy test. They're not removing the text, just the alignment colour (good). And they're adding symbols to make the PC's intent clearer.

  14. Comment by Vulpis on July 13, 2010 at 8:29 am

Well, in particular this helps take care of the problem where most of the dialogue responses other than the specifially red/blue skill-based options, the 'conversation enders', or the obvious information-gathering ones didn't have any clear difference, and in fact often lead to the exact same dialogue anyway…in theory, anyway.

  15. Comment by Vulpis on July 13, 2010 at 8:36 am

You never watch subtlted movies or ones with captions, I take it?

  16. Comment by Vulpis on July 13, 2010 at 8:42 am

Hmmm. Apparently, Mass Effect 2's carryover effects have really, *really* spoiled people, it seems, despite it being the first time a company's ever had carryover have that significant and subtle an effect on the sequel (as compared to, say, Xenosaga where it *only* provides a few extra items/skills, or the .hack sets which are fundamentally one giant game broken into chunks anyway rather than actual separate games). As far as DA2 copying ME's systems…I'm a little amused (as a gamer who tends to tire of all the fantasy-setting stuff and wants more *good* Sci-fi RPGs) that DA2 is basically the classic 'In Space!' trope in *reverse*. :-)

  17. Comment by Casey on July 13, 2010 at 10:45 am

I'm going to try and trust BioWare with all of the changes. They made DA:O, and it ended up being my favorite game of all time. I'm still feeling kind of nervous about things. I didn't mind the text-only conversations; I enjoyed knowing exactly what was to be said before I said it.

I'll miss playing as my grey warden; I became rather attached. Hopefully Hawke will be just as 'attachable.' Kind of depressed I can't be an elf…

*keeps fingers crossed that Zevran will at least be someone you stumble into along the way*

  18. Comment by CaK on July 13, 2010 at 10:50 am

Don't know about Zevran specifically, but we'll run into some former companions …

  21. Comment by CaK on July 13, 2010 at 1:00 pm

Thanks, but those are already covered by us :). See frontpage …

  22. Comment by Jeff on July 13, 2010 at 9:16 pm

Exactly my thoughts, I'm taking my time to finish the game because I'm really enjoying being an elven arcane warrior; why can't I bring him into DA2? aargh

  23. Comment by Hugh on July 13, 2010 at 11:22 pm

THE WHEEL IS A HOLY SHIT. WHY DID THEY TOUCHED DRAGON AGE ORIGINS…THEY HAVE CHANGED EVERYTHING THAT WAS GOOD!!…NOW IT WILL BE A COMPLETELY SHIT! I DON'T WANT A DRAGON EFFECT ACTION GAME, I WANT A DRAGON AGE RPG GAME!!! I DON'T WANT TO GIVE ME THE INDICATIONS ABOUT MY ANSWERS…I PREFER TO READ THE CHOICES AND KNOW IF THEY ARE AN AGRESSIVE ONES OR SARCASTIC, BUT YOU CANNOT TELL ME THAT CAUSE THEN IT HAS NO MEANING…STUPID BIOWARE, I DON'T LIKE WHAT YOU HAVE DONE, FOOL!!!

  24. Comment by Kevin on July 14, 2010 at 3:43 am

Are you insane? This isn't "Dragon Effect," it's still Dragon Age you idiot. Does Putting a conversation wheel change the action and rpg elements? This couldn't be anything but an rpg game; Bioware obviously has experience in developing and defining the difference between their games, so get the sand out of your vag and calm down

  25. Comment by The JS on July 14, 2010 at 3:56 am

I think there's one thing that everyone seems to be ungry about and it's the conversation wheel. I hope that you do realize that it is still just a list of choices. It doesn't matter if they're listed like in DA:O or in a wheel like in ME and ME2

  26. Comment by Danielle88 on July 14, 2010 at 4:20 am

Indeed, ppl are making such a big deal over something that's really just trivial compared to other things, like story and combat, etc.

  27. Comment by Alexander Hodgkiss on July 14, 2010 at 4:22 am

As an Xbox 360 player, this decision to deny that group the full experience is enough to make me not get this sequel, no matter how much I loved DA:O.

  28. Comment by Ladyhawke on July 14, 2010 at 5:46 am

Since Dragon Age Origins was thoroughly enjoyable even though you couldn't import a previous character (because, duh, none existed), I'm sure DA2 will be just an enjoyable with a new character too. Stop booing and hissing about not being able to use your Warden again. Almost every game on the planet starts you off with a new character, so get over yourselves. You're acting like Bioware is suddenly forbidden from further exploring this world they've created unless they let you to use the same character again and again. How many people (or characters) really live a life that would let them experience everything a world has to offer? Very few, if any. If you want to further explore a world, then you need a new char, especially if your DA:O Warden is too busy being King/Queen to start adventuring again.

  29. Comment by Darq Gus on July 14, 2010 at 8:36 am

The Grey Wardens was perhaps too similar a concept to Mass Effect's Spectres, in a game that seemed to borrow heavily from its predecessor. Changing focus from this and creating a new visual style are perhaps good ideas for it to find its own space in RPGs.

  30. Comment by marcos on July 14, 2010 at 4:25 pm

I don't understand. Dragon age crushed mass effect 2 in sales and the solution where there is no problem is masseffecting dragon age 2

  31. Comment by Hugh on July 14, 2010 at 6:03 pm

AN EPIC GAME, MUCH MORE THAN THE FIRST ONE!!!!!

  32. Comment by Ashton on July 14, 2010 at 8:51 pm

Dragon Age Origins was an amazing game. So were all the DLC's. Now everyone freaking out saying the RPG is gone, relax. It is still very early before the game gets out. The information your getting could be false or leaked on purpose by bioware because its not true. Its still an rpg even if you can only be one character. And we've already done a blight. Why keep making games about different blights and so on. Remember your character dies ecen if you didnt to the ultimate sacrfice achievement. the taint will kill them! so stop complaning until you play it. I believe it will be better than the first keep up the amazing work Bioware.

  33. Comment by Marcos_Failed on July 15, 2010 at 8:26 pm

No it didn't? Where r u getting ur info from? Mass Effect 2 its first month did greatly over Dragon Age. I love both rpgs, so im not biased. But state your facts correctly next time.

  34. Comment by Drakontion on July 16, 2010 at 7:39 am

Is there any word on who's doing the soundtrack as yet? Part of what made Origins so awesome for me was Inon Zur's music. Personally I think DA2 will be less without his music. However, am still looking forward to it overall.

  35. Comment by Anonymous on July 16, 2010 at 1:58 pm

“AN EPIC GAME, MUCH MORE THAN THE FIRST ONE!!!!!”

How can you tell? The game isn’t even developed yet, and could be more bugged than the prequel as EA likes to enforce deadline release dates.

  36. Comment by ancientdm on July 17, 2010 at 8:15 am

well that being the case, this new character can cover a ten year span of events and thats fine but those who want to continue there previous character after at best a 1 year time line. They are not asking to live forever just allow them the opportunity to take their own characters to closure.

  37. Comment by billisutra on July 18, 2010 at 12:38 am

Well, one point–let's look at the title of the first in the series: Dragon Age ORIGINS. You played your origins story, which for all intents and purposes led you to the same point after the prologue as any other origin. You're a warden, now the game commences. Playing as a "Shepard-ized" m/f single character doesn't bother me at all; neither did it with ME 1or 2. If Bioware's history is any indicator, this game will be a brilliant improvement on the franchise, as every single one of their previous titles has been–and I look forward to it like a kid waiting for christmas.
HOWEVER, that being said, I hope Bioware / EA learn from their previous epic fails about DRC. I had to go through hell to get my DLC for Mass Effect, and am STILL having trouble with the DA:O content. After pre-ordering and spending $80+ on the game, and ultimately feeling cheated and neglected as a paying customer, I'll wait and see what happens after the release of DA2. If it's as SNAFU'd as DA:O was, then I will, and let me say this loud and clear so Bioware will hear it, DOWNLOAD THE HACKED GAME FROM A TORRENT. Yes, that's right, if you continue this miserable program for downloadable content, you'll have driven a potential paying customer to piracy.

  38. Comment by Ben on July 19, 2010 at 3:54 pm

Overall this looks to be a good game and I can't wait for it to come out. I'm sure it will be a great game like all bioware rpgs. That being said I am sad that you can't play as the warden but bioware is building the plot for when they (hopefully) reintroduce your Origins warden. I just don't like that after you saved Ferelden from a blight and were a hero at amarnthine that they make Hawke the "single most important character in the world of Dragon Age." That statement is very bothering to me……very.

  39. Comment by Crowangel on July 30, 2010 at 9:37 pm

I think ladyhawke the point mysrlf and others are making is.. that its not that DA2 shopuld be warden continuation.. but the fact is DAO is not finished yet.. we still have the morrigan and your love child story to complete which to be honest shuld possibly be the final DLA/expansion you ever get to tie it up and it should be massive in content size.. think following a dangerous path to finally find her. many years after the conception of child and now she has this very powerful child/teen warrior/mage etc whom is filled with dark power to fight against.. its the ultimate climatic showdown.. other than that there is also more for Leliana.. allowing for fact u let Marj live and her final big showdown to tie up Leliana's tale.. ther is more story there for alistar possibly too and Dog.. well the storys are endless lol.. but seriously tho before you start biting people ears off maybe you might reason to accept that before the hype of a brand new game begins and everyone forgets the game that got you here then i think DAO is owed the respect it deserves and deserves a fittng ending ith all plot, locations and story thread tied up that were promised in all variations of the endings..

  40. Comment by Nic-V on August 2, 2010 at 11:50 pm

Honestly I am getting sick of people wanting a Warden continuation while complaining about the game being too much like Mass Effect. We were never promised that we would be importing our character into future games, so why would anyone even begin to think so? Well because Mass Effect did it, that's why! And that's made by Bioware so it must be the same, right? Wrong.
I can understant wanting an ending to the wardens story, something I would very much like myself, but here's hoping that will come in some DLC :D
I hope this didn't turn into too much of a rant XD

  41. Comment by 187Life on August 7, 2010 at 5:25 am

Actually since Dragon Age is the "spirtual successor to Baldur' Gate", the game that revolutionized the whole character import years ahead of Mass Effect. I would assume people draw more from that then Mass Effect. Just sayin.

  42. Comment by DuUkE on August 9, 2010 at 6:18 am

Uh stop with the wheel, Mass Effect's conversation sytem us much more immersive then Dragon Age's…I hated it after playing Mass Effect, your character is always silent, bleh….

    uuuhhh.. more achievements :D

I got 101 of 102 achievements done already. Only lack traveler and that one is just plain boring, need a proper guide for it as well, as the one I found says where to go, but not whom to speak to or what to read to get the codex, as all places are not simply "walk into area" as it really should be. Like Ostagar for example, you need to talk to some dude. But anyway, it will be good with some new ones :), gives me something to do while waiting for the new game.

Exactly, a Walkthrough is supposed to tell where the goodies are so you don't have to waste time searching everyplace.

    Thumbs up on that.

I had just finished NWN 2 before starting DA:O so I had high expectations of Bioware being competitive about improving on their competitors product. I found the game interface clunky and archaic. The rewards system of DA:O is chintzy, I defeat a Boss I expect a power item. I spend my time searching everything I expect to find something worthwhile once in a while, especially when raiding someplace opulent.

how do i transfer rewards etc from golems of agmarrak to my dragon age origins campaign???

  53. Comment by stevegarbage on October 1, 2010 at 5:48 pm

The rewards should automatically appear in your inventory in Origins/Awakening once you earn them. Each one of the three rewards is tied to an achievement in the DLC.

from what i've seen of the rewards, as long as they're unlocked they should be already in the inventory

That's why DAII's Hawke character is going to be fully voiced.

The interface is a throwback to Baldur's Gate, so it's understandable you'll feel that way if you didn't enjoy the older games. However, you should know that Obsidian wasn't really a "competitor", at least not back then – BioWare always used to outsource their sequels to Obsidian.

i played origins and loved it but the dragon age 2 disappointed big time. There are so many bugs; the skills are overdone, meaning that you have to have a degree to figure it out. And i gave the game a real chance but after 15-20 hours of playing i gave up. There are so many other better games out there i rather use my time on. I was really looking forward to this game… what a shame.

any dlc rewards pop up in inventory where they can be used once earned no need to do a thing.

  64. Comment by Harley on August 10, 2011 at 2:34 pm

Waste time?? are you kidding? The whole point of a game is to enjoy the content and see what it has to offer. It's like cheating, whats the point in spending your money and beating the game "easily"? it is simply a waste of money. Savor and enjoy the game.. I loved DA:O even bought ALL the DLC for it and I want to EARN my rewards for the game, I use walkthroughs for a little help when I get stuck thats all…

I’m not costly sure but if so what sence does it make to bring dragon age 1 into dragon age two if you don’t become or are a grey warden duh
