Since March 6, my game time has been consumed by BioWare’s Mass Effect 3. While I was running around the Citadel sidequesting Shepard’s buns off, I came to a striking realization: Mass Effect 3′s Citadel is everything that Dragon Age 2′s Kirkwall wanted to be. So here’s a quick look at how this small part of Mass Effect transcended pretty much the entire backdrop of Dragon Age 2.

Character development and relationships are at the heart of the Dragon Age games.  Building up friendships with your party members can determine their roles in your game, and their eventual staying or leaving.  Keeping characters on is a strategy of a balanced party, of course.  But one of the hallmarks of Dragon Age is the interpersonal relationships that develop, which of course also leads to romance.  Romances are an integral part of the game world and deepen both your character and that of the NPCs.  Romance isn’t integral to the story, but certainly deepens it, in both games.  This of course leads to the inevitable question: which game has the better romance?
