The Joining Ritual

In War, Victory

What We Expect From Our Writers

First and foremost, we expect our writers to be dedicated, mature and have a solid grasp of the English language (an understanding of correct grammar, punctuation, etc. is a must). We would like our writers to be able to commit to writing an article at least once or twice a week at minimum.

We are looking for writers that can write their own content; we are not looking for news editors at the moment, but we are looking for those who can contribute to the blog with original content in a personal way, or with instructional content. For an example of what we are looking for, here are five articles:

Original Content

Instructional Content

While we appreciate the effort and work that goes into producing articles, right now this position is not paid, though we do give writers the chance to have their writing exposed to thousands of readers every day.

In Peace, Vigilance

Does This Sound Like You?

If you are interested in writing for us, please read all instructions before submitting your application, otherwise you will not survive the Joining Ritual. You will die. That is all. Incomplete applications will be ignored — because if you can’t follow instructions now, there’s nothing to make us think you’ll be able to follow instructions if we contact you to write for us.

First off, anyone who’s interested must have:

  • A passion for Video Games. You don’t have to have played through all Origin stories, but you have to have played at least through one.
  • Solid writing ability. Basic spelling and grammar are required — and the ability to form words without any numbers in them is a major plus. Insider tip: we’re going to assume that the writing in your application is an example of the best writing you’re capable of. Once we see a spelling mistake, grammatical error, or typo, we usually stop reading.
  • Proficiency! We want people who can commit to writing on a regular basis.
  • For original content authors, we’re looking for people who can commit to a minimum 2 posts per week.
  • For instructional content contributers, we’re looking for people who can commit to either weekly or bi-weekly content articles. Keep in mind that writing guides and walkthroughs should focus on helping our readers in their game. Be as in-depth as possible in your guides.

But there’s a few technical requirements as well. Before you apply, be sure you:

  • Possess a computer and a reliable Internet connection.
  • Have the software and knowledge to create and manipulate photos and screenshots. (You’ll need to be able to resize images, but you’re welcome to do fancier stuff if you feel like it).
  • Know basic HTML. (Our CMS is all WYSIWYG, but sometimes a bit of additional knowledge helps.)
  • Are reachable outside of Ferelden — via e-mail, IM, Skype, Twitter, Facebook, etc.

Still think you’re right for the job? Well then… Send an email to apply at greywardens.com including:

  • Absolutely no attachments. Every time we receive a Word DOC, somewhere a darkspawn cries. Please include all information in the body of your e-mail.
  • Your full name and whether you’re applying as a original content author or a instructional content author in the subject line. I.e. “John Doe — original content” or “John Doe — instructional content.”
  • Your city and state. (If outside of the US, include country as well.)
  • Your contact information, including email address and any instant messenger addresses. Twitter name, Bioware social network name, Facebook page (if applicable).
  • Availability information — when and how often you think you’ll be able to post.
  • An explanation of why you think you’re the right person for the job.
  • Some information about your background in video games in general, you currently play or previously played, including your current characters and any highlights or achievements you’ve earned in Dragon Age: Origins or Dragon Age: Awakening.

For Original Content Authors, also include:

  • One sample post in the style of a typical Greywardens.com post. Please try to keep the sample between 300-500 words.
  • Three links to posts on Greywardens.com that you feel exemplify our best content.
  • Three suggestions for improving Greywardens.com.

For Instructional Content Authors, also include:

  • Five sample topics you might explore. (if you can’t think of five sample topics, you might want to re-consider your theme.)
  • A first sample piece of around 500 words. (Even if you’re hoping to write longer pieces, 500 words is enough to give us a feel for your writing ability. We get many applications — please do not write a novel.)

If you made it this far you either must be totally nuts or very enthusiastic. That is exactly what we need.

We look forward to hearing from you at applyATgreywardens.com!

Salutations, grey warden`s of Fereldan, and Dragonage represenatives! This is the greatest game I have ever played in my life. I just love the graphics, characters, Armor/ weapons, Dowloadable content [ which i purchased all of them], and awesome epic quests. Let me just say that this game is definetley a 10x award winner. I know how much effort u put into this game, and it will change gaming history forever! I am ready to stand by my beloved fereldan, and fight as a leval 25 assassin rogue, with Alistair, leliana, sten, wynne, zevran, morrigan, shale, oghren, and my faithfal warhound to defend from the blight, and the traitor teryn loghain, in honor of king calen, i set out for the elves of dale, castle redcliffe, the circle tower, and the famous city of orzammer to defend against the horrid darkspawn and the ARCHDEMON!

We may have won the battle against the dreaded Archdemon of an tainted Old God. But, we haven't won the war as we speak Broodmothers in the deep roads connecting to other nations keep thriving darkspawn of every kind, they are also gaining human intelligence like The Architect. Get the most strongest armor (Legion of the dead in origins and Sentinal in Awakening) In future all darkspawn will have human intellect throughout the adaptation process and will outsmart us eventually but that is mostly unlikely. I fight as many warrior of many races but I will stand as the Lvl 22 Warrior Beserker, Templar and Spirit Warrior, I will recruit from the caves of moon shunned werewolves, the deep forests of the dalish elves, the trapped city elves, the men of redcliffe, the old hearts of the golems, the intell of mages, the protection of templars to the bruteful dwarves of Orzammar and hoping all my Conrades as by my side till death do us part…

Hail fellow Greywardens! I am very pleased to count myself among the many Dragon Age fans I see on the DA websites. I started my gaming with Diablo 2 and joining a D2 guild; from there my gaming interest evolved into MMORPGs. DA:Origins is the first non-MMORPG I've played with delight. Being able to d/l additional content has made the game enjoyably convoluted. The depth and diversity is exactly what is needed to replace some of the online game playing advantages that many of us crave. Setting up player dungeons where folks can game together (as they did in D2 and Neverwinter Nights) is an ideal alternative to solo playing.
    Long live Dragon Age!

While I totally understand the need for a professional looking website, you might want to keep in mind that you are asking for volunteers. Most writers that match the qualifications and commitment you are asking for are well paid for them. Perhaps lightening the language a bit, might be more conducive to finding what you’re looking for. There are a lot of talented beginners out there who just need a little encouragement to bloom into the valuable assets you’re wanting. Just a suggestion from a writer.

The application process does look a bit intimidating, I suppose, but really what we want is someone devoted to games, devoted the writing and capable of writing on a high level. There are no experience requirements, just commitment requirements and the application is the first.

If a "beginner" writer is willing to make the effort to put in the app and has the necessary skills, we'll bring them on board. But if he/she can't devote the effort to complete the application, then that's not really a candidate that we'd probably want to consider anyway.

We want people with a love of the Dragon Age franchise and that starts with showing it in the application.

I have to agree with Talon Greywolf. The amount your requesting peer work is more than the current writers appear to be doing. Since it's volunteer more writers who only contribute once a month may be a better solution. I know I am interested but could not commit to more than that. My html is rusty (why did the have to kill front page?) and I'm sure I am not the only one. It would also seem that a writer could submit the article, and an editor could publish it.

All that sad I hope you find some more writers! I love reading the articles and there seem to be much fewer lately.

I just noticed, "peer" instead of "per." Great example of my grammar skills.

Now that I look at these requirements again, they're a bit overstated. I don't think anyone (myself included) does two articles a week anymore. And the need for html skills is a bit exagerrated too, since we use a WordPress editor that's pretty much like any other blogging service out there.

We're always looking for new folks, even if they can only contribute occassionally, especially now that we're in kind of a "lull period" in between games.

As a writer who absolutely loves this game to the point of obsession, it makes me sad to see how off-putting your standards are from the perspective of a potential contributor. In fact, the above guidelines are downright discouraging (I've had paid writing positions that demanded less) . :(

I have no knowledge of HTML (dammit Jim, I'm a writer, not a computer scientist!), but I can write, and I write passionately about things that captivate my imagination. I could go on for pages about this game, but your requirements make me feel like I'm simply not up to the task (even though I'm a published writer who used to work for a magazine as a writer, proofreader and assistant editor).

I love your site. The content is knowledgeable and articulate; the presentation is excellent. It's too bad that your requirements for a writer sound so….persnickety. Relaxing your requirements might bring in droves of horrible writers, but it also might encourage excellent writers to contribute. The guidelines come across as harsh and rigid, especially considering this is an unpaid position (and I don't see this rigid tone anywhere else on your website – you all sound like really nice people).

To dismiss a writer out of hand for a minor typing error ("Once we see a spelling mistake, grammatical error, or typo, we usually stop reading" – there's a comma in this sentence that shouldn't be there, by the way ;)) without considering their writing as a whole. How's their tone? What about their command of the language? How is their use use of humour? How engaging are they? Never mind that they spelled the as 'teh,' or the fact they spell humor as 'humour' because they happen to use British spelling instead of American. To stop reading after one error is unfair and a little draconian – though it's understandable if their application is riddled with errors.

I understand you probably get a lot of people with poor writing skills applying (like those people on American Idol who think they're great singers who really aren't), but there are many literary greats who publish works that have the odd typing or spelling error in it (I've found grammatical errors in the A Song of Ice and Fire series by George R.R. Martin). Writers are human; mistakes happen…it doesn't mean someone isn't worth considering. Typing errors happen, even to the best writers…which is why editors exist, no?

Anyway, that's my four bits on your guidelines. Great website, outstanding content, I just think you need to be a little more forgiving if you want to diversify your author base. :)
